Taking Care Of Your Gutters
When it comes to owning your own home, there are a whole variety of home maintenance projects that you have to take care of, many of which you aren't even aware of until you own your first home. Sometimes you already have a good idea of what these things are, and sometimes you become aware of them only after having something cause problems! While we certainly can't cover every home maintenance need you will encounter when owning a home, we can take care of the info you need on gutters! Here than are some maintenance tips for keeping your gutters in shape.
- Inspect and clean your gutters both in the spring and in the fall, to make sure that they are free of debris. Clogged gutters can cause a whole host of problems, including leaking roofs and water damage.
- When inspecting and cleaning gutters, be sure to use a sturdy ladder, one that will allow you to safely reach into the gutters and scrub loose things that have become attached to the interiors over time.
- After cleaning gutters, flushing them with a stream of water from the hose can help clear out any leftover debris lingering in the downspout.
- There are a wide variety of products available that stop leaves and other debris from accumulating in your gutters. Most often these gutter guards are made of mesh screens, and are easily removable when it comes time to check your gutters. If you are thinking about purchasing one of the systems, make sure that the screens are easy to remove and replace.
- When inspecting your gutters, be sure that the downspouts are draining water at least 4ft. away from your house. Downspout extenders can be used to extend the length of your downspouts, thus preventing water from pooling at the base of your foundation and leaking into your basement.
- Splashback shields are also a handy way to keep water from leaking into your basement, and are available both in concrete and plastic.
Whether you are the first time homeowner, or a seasoned pro when it comes to the yearly home maintenance tasks associated with owning a home, be sure to take good care of your gutters!
